Refresh or full redecoration?
Outside, the gap between the two is even bigger, because weathered surfaces need far more preparation. Your quote will say which your home needs, and why.
| Compare | Refresh | Full redecoration |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Paintwork that's faded or dirty but still sound | Flaking or peeling paint, bare timber, cracked render, rust, or a colour change |
| Masonry | Washed down, small cracks filled, two coats | Fungicidal wash, loose paint removed, cracks repaired, stabilising primer on chalky surfaces, two coats |
| Woodwork | Cleaned and keyed, small areas spot-primed, one or two coats | Failed paint scraped or burnt back, soft spots repaired, bare timber knotted and primed, undercoat and top coat |
| Windows | Paintwork refreshed | Failed putty renewed, joints filled, paint sealed onto the glass |
| Metalwork | Keyed and recoated | Rust wire-brushed back, metal primer, then finish coats |
| Result | Smarter and freshly protected | A sound, sealed finish that will last years longer |
Planned properly
Painted in the right conditions
Paint put on a damp wall or in the cold won't last, however good it looks on the day. I plan exterior work around the weather and never rush it.
Only painted when surfaces are dry and above the paint's minimum temperature
Paths, plants, cars and windows protected
Scaffolding arranged with trusted local scaffolders when it's needed
Kept up to date if the weather means moving a day
Paints & products
Made for the outdoors
Each surface gets a paint designed for it. I use Johnsons Trade & Duluxe Trade and can match your existing colours.
Masonry paint
Smooth or textured, breathable and weatherproof, for brick and render.
Exterior wood paint
Flexible, microporous finishes that move with the timber and let moisture escape.
Metal paint
Rust-inhibiting primers and hard-wearing finishes for gutters, gates and railings.
Wood stains & oil
For timber you'd rather see the grain of, like hardwood doors or cladding.

Questions
Exterior painting FAQs
When is the best time of year to paint outside?
Usually late spring to early autumn, when surfaces are dry and temperatures are steady. It's worth booking early, as the summer months fill up quickly.
Will I need scaffolding?
It depends on the height and the job. Most ground and first-floor work can be done safely from ladders or towers. For high or larger jobs, I arrange scaffolding with trusted local scaffolders, and the cost is shown clearly on your quote.
Can you repair rotten wood before painting?
Yes, I cut out small areas of soft timber and fill them with a resin wood filler. For larger repairs, I work with a trusted joiner. Painting over rot only hides it, so I'll always point it out.
Do I need to be home while you work?
Not usually. As long as I have access to the outside and to water, most customers carry on as normal.
Can you paint uPVC windows and doors?
Yes. uPVC can't be painted with ordinary paint, so I use a specialist uPVC system. Every surface is deep cleaned and degreased, lightly sanded to give a key, then primed and finished in your chosen colour. It's a great way to update faded or yellowed windows, doors, fascias and conservatories without the cost of replacing them. Very dark colours can absorb a lot of heat on sunny elevations, so I'll advise on the best colour choice for your home. If your windows are still under a manufacturer's guarantee, it's worth checking the terms first, as painting can affect it.
Is the outside looking tired?
